I don't know this script, so can't help much there. I'd suggest that you
have a look on the CPAN - putting 'Excel' in search.cpan.org turns up
quite a few things. The one I'd suggest is
Spreadsheet::ParseExcel::Simple (it should be easy enough to use). It
shouldn't be too hard to make it end up in your database using DBI or
Class::DBI. And the author supports his modules very well...
