Expo Report 2005
Posted By Paul O'Malley - 19:03, 20 April 2005
We had a good time in ICT-EXPO this year. The show itself was not as well attended as previous years. What did we do? Well in a break with tradition we gave away a lot of Ubuntu Install CDs made for us at the show by nivalis.ie. We also gave away a lot of other stuff from IFSO.ie, KDE.ie and some company called mandriva :-). We were situated opposite the RedHat stand, who I personally have to thank for providing a speaker at less than 5 minutes warning, a bit like kickstart for conferences. The talks were resonably well attended and seemed to generate interest. We had a good time in ICT-EXPO this year. We gave away a lot of Ubuntu Install CDs made for us at the show by nivalis.ie. We ran two distros on the stand Ubuntu and Kanotix. You can find out more about Ubuntu http://www.ubuntulinux.org, the other disto we ran on the stand was Kanotix http://www.kanotix.org. Post show on the Thursday we went to the School House (Northumberland Rd) and had dinner with some of the people on from the show, along with Evan Leibovitch of the Linux Professional Institute and Paul Everitt of Zope Corporation some of the guys from Open App and the Irish Python User Group.

Linux Upgrade from Windows 98

Upgrading Windows 98 to XP can have a lot of hidden costs, hardware, software and a little shift in paradigm. Well changing the direction of that shift in paradigm, you can save on the hardware and software.

Edited by Paul O'Malley - 10:36, 6 April 2005

This years ICT Expo takes place Wednesday/Thursday 13th/14th April in the RDS Main Hall. This years ILUG@Expo will feature the Linux.ie stand (look for Tux the penguin in the yellow section of the floorplan) aswell as the Open Expo conference which we are co-hosting with OpenIreland.

We're looking forward to seeing you all there. Don't forget to come by the stand to see if you can get a copy of the newly released Ubuntu Linux on cd so you can try out the new #1 Linux distribution on distrowatch.

The BLG is one of the more popular areas of our site and is need of some continuous tender loving care. Some pages could be improved while others simply need updating to the latest and greatest the Linux world has to offer. So have a look and see if you can write a missing page or update an existing one and submit your updates as mentioned on the BLG and to me, chairman@linux.ie (and you can CC to ilug@linux.ie for a bit of distributed proof reading if you're brave).
The almost definitive list of all distros
Posted By Paul O'Malley - 18:41, 4 April 2005
Recently I was asked "what are the different types of Linux?", while the question did not sit well with me I understood what the person was getting at. Well for those who don't know this great little place on the internet it is called distrowatch.

How to Migrate to Linux.
Posted By Paul O'Malley - 18:35, 4 April 2005
When a site says stuff like this : "When Millions of people have made the same switch before you, so it's not impossible. We are going to take you step-by-step through a whole migration from Windows to Linux, covering everything from picking the right Linux distribution to installing Linux applications." I just had to throw a link to it.
