Posted By Ken Guest - 22:29, 3 March 2008
In the best known tradition of ILUG there will be an informal gathering of minds (drinking session) at the Longstone Pub on March 27th.
To make things interesting Paul O'Malley will buy a drink for the person with the most unusual penguin present!
As always, all are very welcome.

Linux Counter Project
Posted By Ken Guest - 10:35, 14 December 2007

The Linux Counter project has been going for some time now and is an attempt to determine how many people are using Linux worldwide.

It is also used to estimate how many machines Linux is installed on.

I received an email this morning asking me to update my details, this is not uncommon as I had not logged in for quite some time, and felt compelled to blog about it to remind others who might want to ’stand up and be counted’.

The Irish Linux Counter Homepage details how best to register yourself if you are based in Ireland

So go on, what are you waiting for?

Free maps! Talk on Thursday, followed by mapping weekend
Posted By Ken Guest - 18:19, 13 November 2007
Edited by Ken Guest - 18:19, 13 November 2007
Steve Coast will be giving a talk about OpenStreetMap in the HEAnet offices, in the IFSC, Dublin on Thursday the 22nd of November at 7pm.
All are welcome.
OpenStreetMap is a project aimed squarely at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive or unexpected ways. Steve Coast, founder of OpenStreetMap, explains.

Steve will also be bringing over OpenStreetMap's loaner GPS units so we can hold a mapping weekend Sat 24th - Sun 25th, at the ICS offices, Mount Street Crescent in Dublin,, starting at 11am each day, and get any new converts up to speed as soon as possible after his talk.

Please mail Gareth Eason (chairman -at- linux.ie) if you hope to attend either event, to give us some idea of numbers to plan for and for security on the door.

Howard Chu talks about OpenLDAP
Posted By Gareth Eason - 01:01, 5 September 2007
Howard Chu will be in Ireland next week and has agreed to give a talk on the up and coming features of OpenLDAP.

The talk is scheduled for 7pm
in the HEAnet offices, IFSC
on Monday, 10th Sept.

ILUG members and interested members of the general public will be very welcome, so please communicate this to other groups that may have an interest.

We will retire to The Isaac Butts pub afterwards to continue our discussions and possibly play a few traditional tunes, weather permitting. (If you're a traditional musician, please bring your instrument.)

So I can get an idea of numbers, and for security on the door, please drop me a mail at chairman -at- linux.ie if you will be attending.

PotD (Pint of the Day)
Posted By Gareth Eason - 00:01, 5 September 2007
In the best traditions of ILUG, there will be an informal gathering of people in the Long Stone pub in Dublin, this Thursday, 6th Sept. evening from approximately 6:30pm until we go home... or to Super Macs for delicious lard.

As always, all are very welcome.

We will try to provide some kind of penguin or high concentration of geek t-shirts to indicate which group we are, so come along and join in the fray. No Linux (or computer) related knowledge required. And you don't have to be mad to attend, but it helps ;-)

For more information, please feel free to e-mail chairman-at-linux.ie
