[ILUG] scripting an array

Hi again.

Perhaps I should just ask for suggestions on how to read in an array
of strings using bash shell scripting. If there is such a way.
I want to read them in from a file that has one entry per line.
I want to put each entry into a case statement, the problem being
that there may be more or less entries depending on network status.
This is why I want to build the list from a file that is created with
current information. I will then read these into, using a loop, a
case statement giving the user a choice of current options.

I did scripting a while ago and am a bit rusty.

Failing the scripting bit how about the same in C or perl or
something like that? Or is it too much like a tutorial question for
the students to answer????
