RAM is an issue for both distributions;
SuSE expects 16Mb+ during install but uses a command-line config tool.
RedHat installs OK under 16Mb but most of the config tools need X11
which really needs 16Mb+
Check the RAM in any machines you buy; old 4Mb/30pin sticks are
hard to find these days.
Other than that, 486s will run fine. AFAICR Alan Cox's linux.org.uk
web server was such a beast for quite a while.
