It's generally not the X server, but rather the wide variation of VGA
implementations and the general lousiness of VGA cards that cause this to
happen. This also happens in M$ products, albeit not to the same extent.

That said, it could be the X server. On the tecra 780 that I use, X
completely refuses to work under linux, displaying exactly the fade-out
stuff that you describe. However, with exactly the same X server along with
exactly the same XF86Config file, it works fine when the system is booted
into freebsd. Go figure.
