Yes.
It would be interesting to liase with other relevant groups on this, such
as the Irish Netsocs and similar groups. Most of them could get
funding for such an event, which would multiply our available funds
considerably.
Dunno if the RDS is a possibility : I would suspect that it's a couple
of orders of magnitude outside our range at the moment :-)
People to contact : All of the ISP's (Dublin), Dell (Dublin), Intel (Leixlip),
IBM (Dublin), HeaNET (Yo! Dave :-), and all of the major Linux vendors
such as RedHat, SuSE, Debian (not technically a vendor, afaik :-),
together with commercial crowds such as Applix and Star Division.
Any such show has to have commercial appeal, which requires showing
commercial grade stability and desktop apps. You also need to
demonstrate hardware availablity, scalability, and robustness, which
means that having demo hardware lent by Dell, Intel and IBM would be
a major, major plus, and each of the three is based in Ireland and
has publically committed to Linux support, so would quite possibly be
amenable to support, sponsorship, and hardware.
Sun might also be approached : several people in the various Netsocs
have already been in contact with various people, and I know Brian
Kennedy well enough to contact him, so that might be another option.
Basically, if this happens, it'll have to be a well-thought-out affair with
some big names behind it. If we can make it happen, it could be fairly
major.
