[ILUG] cars, buffy, licenses, tough programming q's (was: Re: [ILUG] Re: off-topic.....)

i'm finding the last question section tough. any ideas?

Harry Moreau burst across the net:
>Over the past few days, the degree of off-topic-ness of some postings has
>reached ludicrous proportions.

on the surface, yes.

>Discussions of cars (Who has tried out the Toyota Yaris?) and movies (Isn't

cars. empeg. granted, no one has discussed the best car for an empeg,
or places to roll your own empeg, but cars aren't by definition offtopic.

>Buffy cute?) are neither relevant nor I think of interest to this list.

actually it was, "isn't buffy censored." i was actually focusing more
on the "irish" part of ilug there. not completely offtopic since i
thought censorship was dead in ireland, and now i'm wondering if just
films are censored. are video games covered, and if so how will the
authorities deal with free software based games?

>Could we limit ourselves to linux and other related topics, e.g. computers and
>computer science please?

ok, here are a few....

licenses (oh no): caldera 2.2 has a nifty new install process. redhat's
install program is gpl'ed, what of caldera's? also they have a tetris
game playing after they start the install. i thought the tetris people
were getting anal about people copying their game - anyone know more
about this?

programming question: i'm looking for a blocking read/recv call that
times out. it would be best if it didn't involve signals. ideas?
also, i'm looking for this for efficiency reasons. if i did it
with a select and then a read it will involve more data copying
under linux, yes? what about other unicies? it would be nice if the
solution was portable (possibly expressed using ACE).

thanks,

kevin
