syslogd does it for every line of certain logs....

I don't consider 48M a 'miserable' amount of memory - for what it
(Netscape) does - when you consider that you can run a whole operating
system from a few floppies (with a full implementation of the networking
stack) netscape's 50 plus (and growing) Mb points to bad code.
