I have a CS4237 in a dell laptop that works fine... these are my settings:
modules:
alias net-pf-4 off
alias net-pf-5 off
options cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=3
alias sound cs4232
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
#options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=3 mpu_io=0x330
sndstat:
OSS/Free:3.8s2++-971130
Load type: Driver loaded as a module
Kernel: Linux dalasia.dublin.wbtsystems.com 2.2.5 #2 Wed Apr 14 13:53:12 IST
1999 i586
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:

Card config:

Audio devices:
0: Crystal audio controller (CS4236) (DUPLEX)

Synth devices:
0: Yamaha OPL3

Midi devices:

Timers:
0: System clock
1: Crystal audio controller (CS4236)

Mixers:
0: Crystal audio controller (CS4236)

You need to turn on the CS423x driver in the make config, and the opl3 one as
well, I also have the pss turned on (not needed I think, but just in case, and
the mpu401 as well), you need the ad1848 module as well though.

Make sure you have the bios set to non plug-and-play OS, or it may not
enable the audio card.

Regards
L.
