I use exmh on top of nmh, and procmail to sort things into folders.
Works like a charm.

Eg : in my .procmailrc, I have:

:0
* ^(To|Cc): .*linux.ie
| /usr/lib/mh/rcvstore +linux

to sort everything which comes in for a linux.ie address into the
"linux" folder. I have about 20 different rules for various things,
including a spam-catching one which puts suspected spam into a file, not
a folder, and so on...

Exmh is a nice tcl/tk frontend to MH, which is in itself a nice
message-handling system, although not to everyone's taste. It's also
handy when I don't have X available (eg, when sshing in from home) - I
can still use all of my mail functions.
