Ah, the Linda Branagan story. You've got it slightly mangled here -
the daemon-in-sneakers has been a mascot for the BSD community
for a long time, not just of those johnny-come-lately versions for
IBM's newfangled Personal Computer..

- although these stories do tend to get distorted slightly as they make
their way across the net and pass into folklore, this is the version
I've always seen of this tale.
