whether the market will go for them is another question. DEC tried to
position their Alpha workstations as killer NT machines, but nobody
went for it. The vast majority (80%+) of DEC Alpha workstations
shipped with DU.
They don't really have an option in the workstation market
anyway, SGI machines already probably have as much of the market
as they're going to get, and the Visual machines will sew up the
Intel/NT workstation market quickly and easily. However, they
have to work very closely with MS because MS-Sp3 won't work on
the visual's for example, you need SGI SP3...
SGI are in the doldrums. Their high-margin workstation line is stuck
in a rut because SGI decided that they'd scrap the MIPS for IA64. Now
they're screwed cause the latest pentium-2's are already faster than
the R10k, IA64 is still a year away, and SGI don't have any answer
but a souped up Intel machine.
SGI did very well in specialised niche workstations, but they might
have a very tough time ahead of them in the PC market.
