 Update:

I installed the whole bunch on another Linux machine, selected the
standard graphical install, and started to install over ftp from the
other box. In the last twelve hours, 36 out of 700 packagas where
installed, about 220 hours left to go for the rest. Anyone seen this
 before?

The machine is a G6-400 (Gateway) with 384MB of ram, and it was running
 just fine with RH 5.1.
