which more or less amounts to rpm -Uvh sendmail-???.rpm on a
redhat/SuSE/Mandrake system (I've forgotton how to do it with slackware
& debian), with the optional(recommended) m4 re-building of your .cf once
you've that done & whatever little post-editing is required for the small
tweaks that we all so desire.

If you want fun, hit your users without (apparant*) reason, If you want
big fun, blackmail your boss with squid logs or something similar & then
hit him anyway.
anyway, think of the upsides of editing sendmail.cf
#1 it increases your ability to think laterally,
#2 it keeps one off the streets at night when one could be out counting
up points for the number of little old ladies with zimmerframes knocked
down.
#3 it saves you all that money which you'd waste by going on the piss with
yer mates
#4 if you bugger up your sendmail.cf the logs will at least tell you where
the problem lies (shuddering at what I've seen of qmail logs)
#5 once your done editing it doesn't fcuking break !
#6 still _way_ easier than tweaking certain other MTA's from within an NT
registry.
#7 There's quite decent reference book avaliable (We all know what it
is) as well as quite an amount of info online
