Two ways, though I'm not sure whether they are suitable for you:
- tcsh does this. I don't remember the details, but you can tell it all your
subfolders and to notifiy whenever new mails arrives in one of them.
- in X: Check out xbuffy. Opens a little window with one button for each
mailbox (configurable, of course). Can be configured to start your mail
program on button press as well.
