Folks
On a new Dell PC (PIII) I have a 56K 3Com Global Modem. I had deliberately
asked not to receive the named Winmodem and thought that this "Global modem"
would be fine for all os'es. But a week of trying to get the modem working,
I phoned Dell Tech Support and it is a Winmodem assuredly. I asked to see
whether I could send back the modem and get my money to pay for a
non-Winmodem to work on all os'es, but was told that the modem was worth
about £30 and that would be the cost of couriering the modem back to Dell so
really it was not worth my while. I'd be better off buying a new 2nd modem.
Unfortunate experience with the one large PC company which offers
Linux-ready PCs in the US.
The above may be a useful tale for friends of yours when trying to get a new
PC. What would be useful for me would be a list of modems that you good
people use and where you bought them and how much they cost. Anyone out
there got a list ?
Thanks
Joe
