I think if you look into the files in /etc/pam.d you may find your answers.
Redhat boxes tend to refuse a lot of external connections initially.
This gave me grief in the past.
I could be wrong, but give it a try.
David.

Subject: FW: [ILUG] Can't telnet into box...
I have a virgin RH 5.2 install, and inetd doesn't seem to want to accept
connections....any attempts to telnet/ftp into the box, and the connection
is closed. If inetd is put into debug mode, it spits out the following...
------------------------
someone wants telnet
accept, ctrl 3
1400 execl /usr/sbin/tcpd
1400 reaped
------------------------
I can ssh in no prob, cos that isn't being run off inetd..
Any ideas?
PS Anybody got any recommendations for a good monitor, preferably one I
can pick up in Dublin city centre....
Leo
