My experience with cheap internal modems is they give lots of
problems under linux when they work at all. As a result I gave up
buying them and only use externals now.
Since then, haven't had any problems - this includes sub £40 generic
types. Mind you, I have never speed tested them properly and just
use the factory default settings but I do get regular, clean 28k+ file
transfers. Life is too short to fanny around with modem switches -
I've still got the tee-shirt from my FIDO days when such things
seemed terribly important.
I have 3 or 4 modems off-site; one Supra, and the rest are grey.
My own is an ancient USR v34+ Courier - slow but sure. Oh and a USR
Sportster PCMCIA somewhere which is also fine.
All modems connect to various UK ISPs without any problems.
