That's ridiculous !
I would certainly agree that a bad sector is a sign of worse times to come!
I'd pester them until they had no choice but to give in!
However if you are looking for a way to recover from a bad sector I think
the only way is a low level format utility. I believe some companies (WD
springs to mind) provide low level format utils which hide bad sectors from
the user so that when you format the drive it appears undamaged.
As far as I know HDD manufacturers use this technique when they don't get
100% good sectors in their manufacturing process. In fact in the "good old
days" when processes weren't so good I heard that HDD's used to come with a
list of sectors which were bad.
P.S. I don't think it would be libelous for you to tell us the name of the
company as long as you are telling the truth as it happened. (Correct me if
I'm wrong on that one!)

Subject: [ILUG] [OT] reason for replacing a HDD....
My father recently purchased a PC, from someplace I'll not
mention it recently developed a bad sector, which has crapped out Windows
on it, now he rang said place, and they said that a bad sector is no
reason for them to replace the drive, the machine is only two mths old ...
In my mind one bad sector is symptomatic of something worse maybe going
wrong on the drive, and is a reason to replace it, so does anyone know
whether a) a reformat is all I need or b) should I spend the time giving
out a load of crap until they replace it ....
