Problem is, that mainframes have a ridiculous number of support
processors, to take the load off the main CPUs. There is a reason that
you'll pay half a million, for an 8 CPU box, where each CPU is only
130Mips or so. Considering a BP6 with a pair of 550's will set you back
£230 or so, and is about 700 MIPS a CPU.
The S/390's have encryption processors, IO processors (interrupts never
get to the CPU), serial port processors (thing dozens of built in modems).
Most don't have a soundcard though ;)
I'd love to have stayed around DCU long enough to play with their's. I've
got a feeling it's still just acting as a bootserver for the alpha's
running JavaOS or whatever.
