Turns out that the cradle that comes with the palm pilot isn't a 100%
null-modem cable. A widget stuck in between, to wire DCD to DTR, on the PC
end may fix it. I'll get you all know if it works...(I know you can't wait
for the next installment in the "Kate and his Palm get intimate with a
serial cable" story).
