.au files are not linear PCM and I'm not surprised that an early driver
doesn't support it - my guess is it tried to play the file as 8-bit
linear 8KHz. The driver does seem to support different sampling rates
and mono/stereo. I've played at least 32KHz mono myself.

I didn't check that myself. All I have is the digital input from my
CD-ROM drive which works a treat.
