As would Linus, no doubt...
Alan would probably emerge, at least in the interim, as The Man if
Linus relinquished the title of The Man for whatever reason - whether
it's a job he'd actually /want/ in the long term is another matter,
however.
Other free software efforts do fine with no obvious figureheads, so
it's probable that Linux would do fine too - there's plenty of inertia there.
I rather suspect that the natural instinct of /homo sapiens/ to form
committees at the drop of a hat would manifest itself, though.
