I remembered the solution, the protocol should be PS/2 not Microsoft. I had
a funny feeling Microsoft was the problem. My apologies to the TWM guy.

yes I will remember to read the man pages | head -100

Subject: [ILUG] (Easy question) PS2 Mouse

I've just switched from a serial to a PS2 mouse on my laptop. (Toshiba
T1910CS, 486 25MHz, 200MB HD, 4MB Ram, Slackware 3.3 )

I've linked /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux and gpm is working fine. The problem
is that when I startx the pointer goes to top left of the screen and does
odd things. (I was lightly amused by an earlier posting when someone
thought Xfree4 was broken when it started up with TWM)

I came across this before but cannot remember what to do. I know it's
something to do with the Pointer section of XF86Config so here's a snip of
it.

Section "Pointer"
     Protocol "Microsoft"
     Device "/dev/mouse"
# Emulate3Buttons
# Emulate3Timeout 50
EndSection
