I've found that if you're using gpm, a nice way to protect against mouse
changes/upgrades is to set gpm to repeat mouse data as a certain fixed
protocol (serial IntelliMouse is good), have X look at /dev/gpmdata and
tellit what type of mouse it is then all you ever have to do is get gpm
working with the new mouse.

Atlernatively change Protocol from "Microsoft" to "PS/2".
