I realise that I'm a still a newbie, but did have a similar problem in RH 6.2. Instead of ppp, I used Linuxconf from the CLI and was able to resolve the problem, as conf offers more options. Sorry I can't recall the specific method I used to accomplish this but will look through my notes if need be. Just let me know.
