[ILUG] darklight.com / Netscape / question about VMware [WAS: darklight.com should, never, ever, be consideredfor web-anything]

Gotta agree with the sentiments of both Jonathan and David. Personally, I don't
like popups either - the automated kind that is, popups for help screens et al
can be very handy - or cursor trails for that matter, but I think the design of
the site should have no bearing on the quality of service. Then again, Jonathan
shouldn't have laid into suberic.net either - each to his own. No point in
getting into an eye for an eye Jonathan - at the very least it's bad for
business, and on the ILUG you're guaranteed a flaming match. Thanks for the
compliment on iewebs.com btw. Fancy a redesign? :)

And yes, Netscape in Linux is pretty sucky. For a Linux GUI newbie, that's a
point against I'm afraid. And Netscape Messgenger in Linux is positively awful -
yellow highlighting? What's that about? An address book that deletes but doesn't
delete? Think I'll hold onto Windows and Office for a little while longer
(running 98 at the moment - third install - still can't get my three button
mouse to work! Ack!), at least until I can set up fetchmail and a private
webmail system.

Now, a question. I downloaded and installed VMware for Linux, because I need to
be able to edit sites in Windows and test in both. I had Windows 95 running on
my primary partition at the time, and tried to create a virtual machine from
"raw disk", as instructed by the docs. Everything went fine, but when I tried
starting it, it got as far as the LILO prompt and then sent me a stream of "00
00 00...", etc. In the troubleshooting docs[1], it tells me that that's because
I didn't make the Linux partition read-only (although I did). It also says, "To
fix the problem re-run the configuration wizard with the '-rawdisk' switch and
re-configure the VM again". This is where I get confused - run what
configuration wizard with the '-rawdisk' switch? That switch isn't recognised
with the main VMware configuration script or the 'vmware' binary, and you don't
configure a virtual machine from the command line, you do it from within the
VMware GUI. Anybody tried this before?
