The first thing I usually do on installing Linux is to format the entire
file system and nuke whatever version of Windows was once there. If you
do the following:

- Pick the very most recent version of your favorite distribution
- Get as much documentation on your hardware as you can (card names, etc)
- Check the compatibility list for your distro
  (Red Hat's is http://www.redhat.com/support/hardware/)

...then all is likely to be okay. Recent distros have become very good
at auto-detecting hardware lately and for the awkward things like video
cards and monitors, try to have your monitor handy.

Funny you should mention this actually. I reckon ILUG were the only people
at e-XPO to format the filesystems of our demo machines at 8pm the night
before the show :-)
