[ILUG] A bit more about jobs, jobs, jobs...

I've been giving the jobs thing a bit of idle processor time, and I think I may
have a suitable solution to keep everyone happy, while still doing what linux.ie
is utimately supposed to be about - promoting Linux. I'd be interested in any
responses, positive or negative.

Rather than either: a) Creating a few webpages for a few recruitment agencies
that would be time-consuming to update, or b) Creating a db-driven system to
accomodate them all, and then have them get bored with it within a week, I think
it might be better to create a system to aid the people looking for work, and
let the agencies do the monitoring, rather than the prospective employees.
Here's how I see it laid out:

A user seeking work creates a login in the usual manner - his basic login
details are entered in a login table, his personal data is entered in the CV
table. Personal data is required, whether the user likes it or not - this will
be for administration purposes only, I'll come back to it in a minute. Now, the
CV table contains all the regular fields you would associate with a CV, personal
data, education, experience, hobbies, et al. A few other specific fields could
be added, such as Projects and Websites, as well as a general comments field and
a complete copy-and-paste CV field.

Next to each field will be three radio buttons, which will be used for
permissions - Guest Access, Meejum Access, Full Access. The user will be able to
choose exactly what the employer or agency will be able to see by choosing from
the selection, and granting a permission level to them when they request access
to his record. That's everything from the users side.

From the employers/agencies side then, they will be able to browse basic
information with guest access, but to access a users contact data, or other
data, they will also have to register. I think this is only fair for two
reasons: 1) To protect the prospects, and 2) To gather data to improve the
project. When they register, again their login data will go to the logins table,
but any personal and/or corporate data will go to a separate table. I think in
this case the need for permissions is negated, but since the system will already
be available, it might as well be used - to protect mobile numbers and the like
for example.

When the employer/agency chooses what they believe to be a suitable prospect,
they click on a wee button which will notify them of the interest. The prospect
will then be able to login to the system, check out the employers/agencies
details for more info on who's askin', and set a higher access level for the
employer/agency to view their record. The employee will then be notified, and
they will be able to return and check out the CV. Or possibly the CV would be
sent to the employer/agency via email, although this wouldn't be as secure. Of
course, if the user chooses, they will be able to make *all* information
available, but on their own heads be it.

As to administration, the system would require a moderator to ensure there's no
spamming or arsing about going on. Moderating would be very simple - new records
would be added to a staging table, and moving them to a live table would simply
be a matter of checking a box. Notifications of new additions could be sent by
email - in all cases - and users could be passed back into the system using
links in those emails. If the system worked out, adding a further table for the
employers/agencies to post Linux/Unix related jobs would be like pissing up a
rope.

I realise that the system sounds overbearing when I spell it out like that, but
it would be really quite easy to create, and with an intuitive interface it
wouldn't be half as complicated as it sounds. Comments, questions, remarks and
general dissing welcome...
