Use gpm and have it repeat the mouse data as something like ms3
(Intellimouse serial with wheel) or whatever suits. It won't repeat as
ps/2 protocol, but it'll translate ps/2 into serial.
Set X to read /dev/gpmdata (probably already linked to /dev/mouse anyway)
and set it to the same protocol as gpm is repeating. Then as far as X is
concerned, there's always a mouse connected. If the mouse stops
responding, restart gpm and you should be sorted.
This procedure works for me under very similar circumstances (el cheapo
manual switchbox).
