Do you really need to shutdown X? If you want a
console login hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 (or F2,F3 up to F6 methinks)
Alt+F7 will get the X session back.

Maybe you (didn't need to know/already knew) that
but I thought I'd throw it in anyway
