Assuming using the NTDLR then LILO:
(ntloader on MBR, pointing to lilo in first sector of ext2 partition)
use dd to get a copy of the MBR.
have a linux boot/rescue disk handy
install 98 fine.
boot with the linux boot disk, and use dd to rewrite the mbr.
edit boot.ini to add the following
C:\="Microsoft Windows"
and that should do the trick there
I use lilo as main boot manager, and point to win2k bootloader
other = /dev/hda1
label = win
this give the focus to ntldr, which I can then choose win2k or win98
If you dd out the mbr of a functional lilo install to a file accessible by
the ntldr, you can boot linux from the nt/2k bootloader.
Moral of story: keep copies of mbrs after each os install, with a linux
rescue disk to give access to dd, and the individual files
