suggests a problem with your chat script.
Nice thing about diald is that it's just mostly /managing/ the other
bits of software that you would use anyway to dial up, eg chat, pppd.
So rather than scratching your head thinking "where do i start with
debugging this diald thing", you should instead debug the bits
seperately.
eg.
does my chat script work on it's own?
does it work when diald runs it?
in your case, if the modem is droppping straight away, then it might
be a problem with your chat script. Try running it standalone, and
see whether it connects.

what about /var/log/messages? diald.log is an accounting log. The
interesting stuff will be in your main log file.

ppp/options should be virtually blank when using diald, except for
the most global options, eg:
noauth
asyncmap 0
deflate 14,14
bsdcomp 15,15

what are these scripts, po/poff?

you'll want to tighten up <...>/lib/diald/standard.filter then, or
you'll find the 'net being brought up and down at random.
