Hi Eoin,
I have the misfortune to also have a Euroviva 33.6 SP PNP modem. It
took me
about three days to install it under Linux (Suse 6.0),
during which I tried literaly everything init strings, recompiling the
kernel many
times, pnpdump, downloading new drivers etc...The symptoms of my problem
were
that whenever I attempted to dial out I'd hear a click and the modem
would hang
and the line would remain dead until I took the
phoneline out of the back of the box (although in my case the modem
didn't work under
windows either). I had ruled out the possibility of it being a phone
line problem
since a USR 33.6 external modem worked without a problem in both Linux
and windows.
Anyway I was on the point of returning the modem when I decided to
exhaust the last
possibility, I attached the modem directly to the main telephone line
coming into the
house and unwired all the other lines going off it, guess what, it
worked! So I basically
rewired the phone lines in the house and the modem has worked fine
since. A couple of
days ago I moved into a new office and got TE to install a new phone
line especially for
my modem, guess what, the modem hangs this line every time! (good old
TE). I surmise that this particular modem is very sensitive to line
quality (i.e. its a dodgy make).
So basically I'd try to plug it into a different phone socket or to try
it in a
different building, if this doesn't work return it, its probably
banjaxed.
