IIRC pon sets up the pppd to connect using the pppconfig files ... these
conflict with diald (ie: diald can't work with pon ... you'll have to either
specify a different pppconfig file, or set up the po[n|ff] scripts to use an
alternate config.

pon gets pppd to do the dialling ... and when diald starts pppd, pppd tries
to do the dialling, thereby hanging up ...

Beyond that I can't recall what I did to resolve the issue ... I did get it
working once, so good luck ...
