Finally bought a home pc, dell in the end. no problems yet :-).
SuSE 6.3 install went like a dream (maybe since i stayed up all night),
amazing how neat fips was with partition split. Anyway... questions
1) I have nVidia TNT2 M64 video card. X 3.3.5, and the nVidia Open GL
drivers. Seems ok. Ran xracer, (as root, getting ahead of myself ;-),
which hung machine... disk churning (over 10 mins) kbd and mouse locked,
couldn't ctrl-alt-del/backspace out, couldn't change to a different
console. Reset the machine. IS there a better way to recover from this
kind of thing???? (seems risky shutting down w/o even umounting). Also,
any ways to reduce chance of hangs?
2) Does anyone have any advice on modems? Diamond external gets good
mentions, IR£89 on shelf in Dixons (cheaper uk, but delivery dear).
Peats have a genius ext something or other (website unclear) £69.99 on
web site. Compustore seems bit off the wall in terms of costs. What are
issues (apart from external good, winmodem bad), any recommendations
from people who have bought already (suppliers and models).
