Am guessing that the 486 is using a slower transfer rate.
Probably one of the PIO modes instead of a DMA transfer. Or just
a slower PIO mode.

The transfer rates mentioned are maximum burst rates not
sustained transfer rates.

Well that makes it a PIO mode on the 486. DMA needs MCA/PCI.
Check the bios settings for the drives. Thread carefully in
there.
