Kind of related - someone posted an enquiry on Enterprise Ireland's
ebusiness_discussion mailing list recently, looking for people to place some of
his students for six months. He outlined the course, and it was the usual
stuff - Windows, VB, Office, etc.
Out of interest, I emailed him to ask if they actually covered anything other
than the usual Microsoft related stuff, and if not, why not. I got a very
detailed reply, explaining that they do cover Linux and that too, but usually in
the second six months of a course. What might apply here though is a comment in
his last reply to me:
"we are currently designing a BSc in Computing in It Sligo. If you don't mind I
would like to give your email address to the design team. they are currently in
the process of contacting people who might have an interest in this area."
Now I really only did this out of curiousity, because from the little time I've
spent with Linux I've found it to be eminently more suitable for an awful lot of
jobs than Windows, particularly when it comes to the Internet. And I know
precious little about the inner workings of college, and even less about the
design of a course.
However, if someone here - who would be willing and able to do a better job than
me obviously - would be interested in taking up the "Linux cause", I'd be
delighted to refer them on. At the very least, I'd avoid embarassing myself
severely. :)
