Did you try the latest snapshot from http://opensource.creative.com ?
Works for me with full duplex on the PCM side, and it has the neat trick
of allowing up to 32 programs to open /dev/dsp - all mixed into the
output.

I don't know about software, but check http://www.opensound.com/ for a
list of OSS (kernel driver) compliant applications.
