Hi,
I recently purchased a Soundblaster 16 PCI , mainly cos I thought "Well
this will be easy to install" hrmph!
I installed the card & RH picked it up as an Ensoniq ES1371, played a
little message from Linus & I thought "Great!".
I then tried to cat the same .au file to /dev/audio, whereupon the
speakers spat out deafening white noise underneath which you could
_just_ make out the sound being played. The CD player works fine.
If I use "play" to play an .au file to the audio device it works fine.
It also works well through sox, but only if I specify "-t ossdsp" as the
device type of the audio device, otherwise I get the white noise
obliterating the sample.
The reason for my purchasing the sound card is to use it with ViaVoice
for linux. When I attempt to do so anything played by ViaVoice is
obliterated with white noise also.
I've tried the alsa drivers with the same results.
I've removed alsa and manually mknod'ed the /dev/audio, dsp, sequencer
and so on as recommended in a faq., and done the whole RH sndconfig
again
Still the same results.
Any ideas would be great, as I'm stumped. It should work out of the box,
right?
TIA
Tom.
