I had the same problem with a modem that I wa slooking at for a
staff member. I set the modem up here and all worked fine, she
took it home and it didn't work. I called round and looked at it for
her again and couldn't get it to work. There was a dial tone on the
phone line so I thought it was OK.
After several attempts I checked the wiring and found that it was
dodgy. I would have done this sooner but it meant moving
everything to another room.
