Well it took two stages to create the file :
tar xvf file.tar files
gzip -9 file.tar
So it will take two stages to untar the file. Think of it as putting
something into a box(1) and then putting the box into another box(2). To get
at the item you have to take it out of box 2 first and then out
of box 1 (ie two stages)
The book I started with was Running Linux (about 4 years ago) I think
there is a 2nd edition out now. It's an excellent book and will give you
a great start to Linux/UNIX. (of course it's an O'Reilly book)
