I suspect the reason for the two stages is that Unix is full of commands
designed to perform specific functions. Couple that with a mighty piping
system and you can perform marvels with a single command line.
Books you say?
I started about two years ago with "Linux Installation and Getting Started"
by Matt Welsh. It should be available at
sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/docs/LDP/install-guide. I thought it was a good
starting point.
I bought Linux in a Nutshell which was not that useful for a newbie, I
suspect is was written for people who need something hard to lean on while
noting locomotive numbers.
I just acquired a copy of Running Linux and am leafing through it whenever
I can. I'm a touch upset because I just discovered what the Tab key does
when entering commands. Two years of typing in full commands! So far it
seems to be a good book, relatively inexpensive and well written. The one I
have is the second edition dated August 1997 so it's missing some of the
latest information but that's where ILUG fills the gaps.
Have fun!
Peter
