Hi.
The tar stage takes numerous files and packs them into one file,
maintaining the original hierarchical structure, etc. GZip will then
compress that file. It's more like putting all the files into a box, then
standing on the box so it will fit in your pocket. The original function
of tar was for tape-archiving, but as you can see, is commonly used for
packing distributions.
