Re: [ILUG] Er, while I'm here...

Not wanting to be the one to get picky about this ... but how much of
lugh's resources does ILUG use?? (disk only as that's all we're talking
about here). And with the exception of the mail archive, how often does
the ILUG tree(s) change?? This doesn't strike me as necessarily being
all that beneficial to ILUG itself. One could argue that little more
than a zip drive would probably suffice.

Then again, you are donating the box's resources in other ways to ILUG
so some form of one off payment for this may be in order (other than
Indigo agreeing to host the box for free) so from that point of view,
it's not a bad idea.

Alternatively, anyone got a DAT drive or SCSI card to donate to the
cause.

Dave -- not disagreeing but at least pointing out the other side of
        the coin...

)
) I've mentioned this to a few people already; I figure the only way to
) get an actual decision (until we have a formal committee in place) is to
) ask the list:
)
) As most of you probably know, the ILUG web pages and mailing lists are
) run from my machine, lugh.tuatha.org, which is located in Indigo
) Internet's Web farm - this machine is well-connected to most facets of
) the Irish Internet, and I'm happy to have it used permanently as the
) ILUG's Net home.
)
) I used to back up this machine across the network (in the middle of the
) night) to a tape here in Trinity, however the volume of data is such
) that this isn't really a viable long-term solution.
)
) As we do have some cash available (the donation from the Irish Unix
) Users' Group), might I suggest that I purchase a tape drive, controller
) and media for lugh, to ensure the safety and reliability of the ILUG's
) main resources?
)
) Other obvious uses for the money include paying the IEDR's annual charge
) for the linux.ie domain, membership of the GLUE (as suggested by
) Caolan), and subscriptions to various things like the LJ. We'll have
) to work out ideas related to where "physical" things can be kept -
) probably distributed somehow between Dublin, Galway and Limerick, which
) is where the bulk of subscribers seem to be...
)
) Anyway, initial reaction to my expenditure proposal has been such that I
) expect largely favourable responses; so there's no real need to mail me
) if you're okay with the idea - however, if you think it's a *bad*
) plan, please mail me or the list to explain why, and we'll try to work
) something out. Note that I'm talking about spending about 10% of our
) current cash resources on this - it should last us more-or-less
) indefinetly.
