If you are only browsing tar balls, and if you use mc (Midnight
Commander) selecting a tar or compressed file (in most compression
formats inc. zip) mc will create a virtual filesystem which you can
happily browse including viewing the content of text files and even
copy individual files into real space. All this without actually decompressing the
file.
You still need to unpack the file with tar if you want all its
contents available as real files (to do a compile for instance) or to use binaries.
