speaking of which, FWIW i think it's a shame that subdomains off .ie aren't
set aside for the community and for things like schools in the same way that
they do (to an extent) with .us. my dad is involved in community work in
innishannon, co cork; he works with the church in the choir amongst other
things. he was asking me a few months ago about whether they could get a
web page for the town. i thought this was off the wall for a while, but then
i thought it had potential -- if you could get a decent domain name, like
(e.g. -- i'm open to suggestions) innishannon.ck.ie, or whatever.
as more and more people in all walks of life start using the web, such
local-oriented sites would become more and more relevant. besides, there are
only so many fscked-up permutations of scoil-mhuire.ie, one less readable than
the next.
on this page, the churches, the post office and other public services could
have a page telling potential visitors/tourists and the community about their
opening hours, phone numbers, the services they provide and so on. this would
potentially be very beneficial to tourist towns -- tourists could suss out
places to stay, proximity to golf courses etc. i would look on this as being
a by-the-community-for-the-community type system, as opposed to some commercial
for-profit venture, because giving out these domains on a for-cash basis
wouldn't work either AFAICS.
making all this actually come together would be another life's work, i'm
just bitching about the domain name situation. i know that the ISPs and
heanet and other big IP network folks in ireland have been talking with IEDR
about all this, but i'm not too clued in about progress or lack thereof.
i know that some of the people on this list are well up on .ie stuff (maybe
even in IEDR?), so if any of them have any words of wisdom i'd love to hear
them. :)
ok i'll shut up now. sorry about the off-topic-ness and length of this but
i think it is potentially of interest to more than a few ILUG people.
so what do ye think?
