I was actually thinking that it'd be reasonably easy to set up some kind
of dynamic-DNS thing to do this for free, as a "public good" project.
Of course you'd need a hosted machine and some time to write a CGI script.
You're right though, the IEDR pricing is outrageous, and some kind of .us
concept would be very good.
