damn, you slipped past my "new list" filter. thankfully i've now added
the text.
and my addition to this meta discussion is this: i think we should have
an idiots list. a place where people who don't know how to trim quotes,
start up threads on the pros and cons of smoking, request new lists along
with the desire to exert the meglomaniacal control they've wanted all
their lives, flame anyone who requests information on a point they've
made or disagrees with them in the slightest way, and other such bits
of random ignorance could go.
that way the people with a clue can happily discuss things they care
about and also be able to help new users with their issues as they arise.
and the way it would work is that everyone subscribed to ilug (and who
posted that week) would get a vote and could submit one email address
a week to the idiot pool (maybe an X-ILUG-Idiot header). then the top
ten are voted for on the following Monday. Whoever gets more than 30
votes is unsubscribed from ilug and resubscribed to idiots. for one week
they'll be unable to unsubscribe (something you agree to implicitly by
subscribing to ilug) and unable to post to ilug.
i for one like "newbies" if they come to the list with a question and
are friendly and eager. they don't have all the baggage nearly all of us
"oldies" have and their fresh perspectives aren't just nice but required.
seeing as how it's nearly the forth of july, the date of the american
revolution and snappy sayings ("don't tread on me," "no taxation without
representation," etc) i suggest this as the new revolutionary mailing
list slogan: "more newbies, less idiots!"
